J.B.Priestley’s play, An Inspector Calls :: English Literature

Dear Mr. Anthony HopkinsThank you for accepting the role of the quizzer in my production ofJ B Priestleys gip An inspector c altogethers.The play is set in the early 1912 before the First globe war in a timewhen thither was a coitus accomplishment of economic and cordial stability. Theplay is set in a fictous due north Midlands industrial city of Brumley.The play is about a family, the birles who ar celebrating their young ladys engagement to a young man c anyed Gerald Croft whose family withal testify a business or featureory similar to that of the rotate familybusiness. Gerald Croft and all the members in the birl family whichinclude Arthur and Sybil Birling (the parents), Eric Birling (theirson) and their girl Sheila Birling who is engaged with GeraldCroft are all sat round at the their dine table having a dinner partyparty to celebrate the fact that Sheila and Gerald are both engaged.Just after Mr.Birling has completed his pompous speech, there dinnerparty is int errupted by the arrival of tester Goole, who announcesthat he is make enquiries about a young woman called Eva metalworker whohas attached suicide by swallowing disinfectant. The Inspector firstshows Mr Birling a prove of Eva smith that Mr Birling recognisesstraight away because Eva Smith use to hunt in Mr.Birlings factory,but was sacked because she was one of the ringleaders of a shine thatwas demanding a pay rise. Mr Birling tries to talk the Inspector in to passing them simply by making threats to him and trying to impress himwith his high social status. The Inspector is still determined tointerrogate all of them hinting to them that they are all affiliated toEva Smiths terminal. Gerald had hadan affair with Daisy Renton (alias Eva Smith) the previous summer shewas his mistress until it no more fit him.
